Five ways to keep your budget on track

Plan internals before shutters
Decide on drawers, hanging rods, saree shelves and a locker first. Internal fittings shape how useful a wardrobe is far more than the shutter finish does.

Choose shutter type by room size
Sliding shutters suit narrow rooms where a hinged door would hit the bed. In larger rooms, hinged shutters give full access to the interior and are often easier to maintain.

Protect against damp and pests
Ask for anti-termite treatment and a small air gap from external walls. BWP plywood is worth considering for wardrobes on walls shared with bathrooms or in ground-floor rooms.

Include a secure locker
A concealed locker or lockable drawer for jewellery and documents is a common Chennai request. Plan its location with your designer so it is accessible but discreet.

How is wardrobe cost calculated?
Wardrobe cost depends on the area of the unit, the board material, the shutter type and finish, and the internal fittings and hardware. Quotes may be per square foot or per unit, so compare like for like across designers.
Are sliding wardrobes more expensive than hinged ones?
Sliding wardrobes often cost a little more because of the track system and heavier shutters. They save floor space in compact rooms, which is why many Chennai apartment owners choose them.
Which material is best for wardrobes in humid Chennai?
Good-quality MR or BWP plywood with a laminate finish is a common, durable choice. HDHMR is another option for shutters. Your designer can recommend materials based on the room's exposure to moisture.
